IRON INFUSION
THE PROCEDURE
Intravenous or IV means giving something directly into the blood stream of the body through a vein. A needle placed into a vein is attached to a drip that contains iron mixed with saline. This fluid is slowly dripped into the vein and mixes with the blood in your body. The iron infusion will take 4-5 hours so it is advisable to wear comfortable clothing and bring along reading material. Wireless internet and television are available. Meals will be provided during your stay. No prior preparation is required for this procedure and you can take your regular medications as necessary.
Why is iron essential?
Iron is essential for the body to make haemoglobin (a pigment that make red blood cells red). When the amount of iron in the body gets too low, the haemoglobin falls below normal. This is known as iron deficiency anemia.
Why might I need IV iron?
The most common way to treat iron deficiency anemia is to take iron by the mouth as a tablet or liquid. This treatment works well for most people and is usually tried first. IV iron might be needed if you are:
- Unable to tolerate oral iron
- Unable to absorb iron through the gut
- Unable to absorb enough iron due to the amount of blood that the body is losing
- In need of a rapid increase in iron levels to avoid complications or a blood transfusion
POTENTIAL COMPLICATIONS
Your doctor will explain the risks, benefits and available alternatives to IV iron in your particular case. IV iron infusion is a safe and much more rapid method of replenishing iron stores. The most significant risk of IV iron is a small chance of having an allergic reaction or intolerance which can easily be treated with no further complications.
How to book an iron infusion?
You require a valid referral from a doctor or specialist to make an appointment for a consultation prior to organising an iron infusion.
